STARZ! (Sat, Aug. 26, 8 p.m. ET)
The pay-cable service presents a gloriously goof ball spoof of the sci-fi serials of the early ’50s. Daniel Riordan plays the star of Captain Zoom, a cheesy, low-budget TV show on the old DuMont network. (DuMont was in fact the home of Captain Video.) Transmissions of the program are picked up 400 light-years away on the planet Pangea, where overmatched freedom fighters are waging a valiant guerrilla war against an evil overlord (Ron Perlman of Beauty and the Beast). Accepting Captain Zoom’s billing as the “defender of the universe,” the Pangeans end up transporting Riordan, a vain, pompous, outlandishly garbed actor, to their world. The result is a whimsical, consistently amusing film. By the way, look for Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek’s Lieutenant Uhura) as a less-than-cheery seer.
