Lord, it is wonderful to see Lucy back. Lucille Ball is still TV’s greatest clown. This time, though, she’s wearing a sad face to play a New York bag lady; she won’t make you laugh, but she will make you cry. The movie, written by Rose Leiman (The Burning Bed) Goldemberg, has a simple message about the homeless: They’re not as different as we would like to think. Sometimes the delivery of that message turns manipulative—having a bag lady cuddle up with a teddy bear is a too obvious tug on the heartstrings. But Lucy rescues Stone Pillow with her grand dignity.
