Some scenes in Second Chance are almost heavenly—namely, when Kiel (Hill Street Blues) Martin goes to the pearly gates and meets Joseph Maher as St. Peter, an angel with a devilish sense of humor. Martin dies in 2011 and on his judgment day discovers that he’s not good enough for heaven or bad enough for hell—”Let’s put it this way,” says St. Peter. “If you were music, you’d be Barry Manilow.” So Martin gets his second chance. He returns to earth in 1987, meets himself as a teenager (played by Matthew Perry) and keeps himself from making terrible mistakes like robbing a store or breaking a young girl’s heart. The series had weak moments in its first weeks—usually when Martin’s teen neighbors showed up. But thanks to Martin’s charm, I decided to give the show a third chance, and the gamble paid off. Second Chance gets better and cuter every week.
