To be blunt about it, Sadie and Son smells—musty like mothballs, sweetsy like cheap car deodorant, yucky like the subways in which it is set. Debbie Reynolds puts on a New York accent, a Mae West timbre and a baggy police uniform and tries to look like a tough, crusty, killer cop. Between gunning down bad guys, fearless Debbie pushes her son, Brian McNamara, to become a cop himself, giving up his oh-so-promising career as a modern, hip comic who does Walter Brennan imitations (a good trick, considering the kid is about 10 years too young to have watched The Real McCoys). The twinkiest.
