Picks and Pans Review: Music Man

Posted on

Waylon Jennings

No frills, no star trip, no bull—Jennings and his band just produce consistently superb, hard-edged country music. This album is no exception, but is unusual because of incognito guest appearances by Johnny Rodriguez and Jerry Reed (they play backup guitar) and a rather peculiar choice of material including Kenny Rogers’ Sweet Music Man, Jimmy Buffett’s He Went to Paris and Jessi Colter’s Storms Never Last. There is also, however, Waltz across Texas by Ernest Tubb, the Gershwin of country music. That track alone earns Waylon forgiveness for having written and recorded The Theme from CBS’ Dukes of Hazzard.
