Gene Hackman grumbles expertly as a combat-weary Foreign Legion major ordered to lead his men into the Sahara on an archeological treasure hunt after World War I. Joining the ragtag squad is Terence Hill, who portrays a cocky cat burglar out to seduce Catherine Deneuve, an archeologist’s daughter. Her porcelain perfection cuts like a Chanel ad through the dusty haze. Except for the mélange of accents, the heroic and romantic mesh nicely. (PG)
