Forget Ben Casey and Marcus Welby. This new quasi documentary—a pet image-building project of the network’s new president, Fred Silverman—will focus on a real doctor each week. The first, Washington pediatric surgeon Judson Randolph, operates on a newborn, treats two young burn victims (one dies) and tests a girl for cancer. The treatment may be too graphic for some, and others may miss potboiler plot lines and cure-all happy endings. But the concept is laudably ambitious, and the initial episode is gripping.
