Picks and Pans Review: John Denver

John Denver

By now the battle lines are well drawn on the subject of John Denver, and this safe and sane LP introduces little new material to the debate. Fans of (what they see as) his soaring vocals and sensitive, sincere lyrics will like this album. Nonfans will again be driven crackers by (what they see as) bits of Zen bubble gum (“Where do you go if you’ve got no way to get there?”) and Crest-test cheerfulness (one song consists of the repeated lyric “Life is so good”). For better or worse, Denver does rock harder than usual on his own Downhill Stuff and the classic Johnny B. Goode and occasionally even slips a growl into his otherwise mellifluous tenor.
