Jack Tempchin

Given that Tempchin wrote the country-rock classics Peaceful Easy Feeling and Already Gone, it’s no surprise that he sounds a little like a lone Eagle. But though friends Tom Waits, J.D. Souther, Glenn Frey and Jackson Browne pop up in the credits, his Muscle Shoals-produced debut LP is—for better or worse—a little raspier than the homogenized sound of his fellow L.A. cowboys. Tempchin is an adequate tenor and an above-average lyricist (“Life is one big automobile/ I’ve been 15 days under the hood”), but could vary his imagery: Five of 10 songs mention automobiles and a sixth, Skateboard Johnny, sounds like a truck-driving song for little wheels.
