This is Shelley Long’s first sitcom venture since she left Cheers in 1987, and it’s a major bummer for anyone who loved her when she kept bar with Ted Danson. She plays a bestselling author on marriage who, in the laugh-free pilot episode, discovers—that’s right!—that her husband (Christopher McDonald) is cheating on her! This will presumably free her in future episodes to become involved with Treat Williams, a divorce attorney with an office in the same building, Long has opportunities to do the specially she developed on Cheers—being icky and charming at the same time. But the gag level is low (her young son, played by Ross Malinger, learns his parents are splitting and asks Long if this means she’ll become an alcoholic), and the supporting cast barely registers. Williams enters his scenes as if he were trying to remember where he left a package.
