A few months ago these four Londoners went from poverty to platinum with their first LP. Dominated by Mark Knopfler’s light-fingered, somewhat ominous guitar playing and Dylanesque vocals, their sound was epitomized in the hit single Sultans of Swing. This second LP is almost indistinguishable from that auspicious start. Knopfler again writes (with some now-familiar chord changes), sings and picks on all the tunes. His lyrics are still clever (“Knight in his armor wants a night in your arms”) and foreboding (“Even the hero gets a bullet in the chest”). If it’s too repetitious for some, diehard fans won’t complain.
