Picks and Pans Review: By the Light of the Moon

Los Lobos

The sound is the musical equivalent of Tex-Mex food, with the accordion of lead singer David Hidalgo providing the spice. There’s a loose feel to the music, even though many of the Los Angeles quintet’s songs are serious, bordering on apocalyptic, whether the subject is life in general or romantic life in particular. There’s even Is This All There Is?, which recalls Peggy Lee’s Is That All There Is? Hidalgo, Louie Peŕez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin combine good-time music and portentous lyrics in a way that can be jarring. But the group lives with the tension, and the rock-flavored part of the band’s style lightens up things so you hardly notice that, say, the Hidalgo-Peŕez song One Time, One Night deals with murder and child abduction.
