Let’s eavesdrop on my brain as I watched Bridges to Cross: “Huh? Whosat? What’re they doing? How come?” My befuddled brain never got answers from this undramatic drama, this mysterious mystery, this wingless pilot for a new series. The cast is filled with people you want to like. Suzanne Pleshette plays a magazine reporter who never types. José Ferrer is her editor. Eva Gabor and Roddy McDowall are her buddies and Nicolas (Stark) Surovy is her ex-husband and chief competitor for scoops. Throughout the show, Suzanne and her ex talk to the camera about their marriage. Relationship talk is hard to take from friends—but from strangers, it’s ear-numbing. They spend the rest of the show fighting over a big story, something to do with an art dealer who may or may not be a single-, double-or triple-agent because he smuggled microfilm in a cadaver’s capped tooth. Neither they nor I could keep that story straight. Last season Pleshette played a newspaperwoman, but her paper folded. I wanted to see her win this time. But I won’t be subscribing to her magazine.
