The 356 national parks, monuments and recreation areas, which cover 80 million acres in the U.S., drew 269 million visitors last year. The hiking hordes usually visit in the summer, though, so now is a good time to think about finding a few days for a trip this fall—the best time weatherwise as well as congestionwise.
