Picks and Pans Main: TV

Posted on

FOX, Tuesdays, 8 p.m. ET/PT |

In its second season, the high school musical comedy occasionally flies off the rails-an episode in which students were put under by sexy dentist John Stamos and hallucinated themselves into Britney Spears videos was labored and borderline kinky. Oops! But maybe that’s to be expected from this aggressively inventive pop fantasy, where mundane details like homework never matter. I’m willing to forgive a lot, including Lea Michele’s demolishing blasts of Streisand lung power, for moments as original as Chris Colfer’s slow, sad “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” And we’ve seen the emergence of a gem of a performance: Heather Morris as dumb yet manipulative cheerleader Brittany, whose mumbled inanities are somehow adorable. Asked to define “duet,” she answered: “A blanket.”

Bret Michaels: Life as I Know It

VH1, Mondays, 10 p.m. ET/PT |

The old Rock of Love Bret Michaels is gone, tamed and reformed by his recent medical crisis: a brain hemorrhage followed by a small stroke. Life finds him trying to commit more time to family while testing his health by getting back on the road with his music. The series goes overboard on cutesy domestic details-what is it with reality shows assuming that a shot of pet droppings is a surefire chuckle?-but as a Bret Bulletin, it should gratify and reassure his fans.
