Pineapple Express star Seth Rogen, 28, popped the question to his longtime girlfriend, actress Lauren Miller, in late September. The couple have been dating since 2004, and according to a source, “Seth is so excited.” • The Daily Show correspondent John Oliver, 33, revealed on Oct. 2 that he will tie the knot next year with Kate Norley, his girlfriend of two years. The comedian met the Iraq War veteran and former U.S. Army medic when he was covering the 2008 Republican National Convention and proposed in July in St. Thomas. He joked with PEOPLE, “It’s so emasculating to go out with someone who has actually done something valuable with their life.”
Just two months after their wedding, former Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek, 33, and his bride, Kimberly, welcomed their first child, Olivia, Sept. 25. The proud papa tweeted that he “couldn’t come close to describing this bliss even if I had 140 million characters.”
On Sept. 30 relatives of 27 of the 33 Chilean miners who have been trapped underground since Aug. 5 sued the owners of the gold and copper mine for some $12 million. The families, who are keeping vigil, also plan to sue the Chilean government for substantial damages for negligence and safety violations. The rescue effort has proceeded more quickly than expected, and the miners may be freed within a few weeks.
On Oct. 4 rapper Lil Wayne, 28 (inset), was transferred to solitary confinement at Rikers Island for the remaining days of his one-year prison sentence for gun possession. In May officials caught him with contraband musical equipment-nonprison-issued headphones and an iPod charger. He will spend up to 23 hours a day in isolation until his Nov. 4 release.
On Oct. 5 in New Haven, Steven Hayes, 47, was convicted of killing Jennifer Hawke-Petit, 48, and her daughters Hayley, 17, and Michaela, 11, in the infamous July 2007 home invasion in Cheshire, Conn. Hayes was found guilty on 16 of 17 counts and now faces the death penalty. The only survivor of the brutal crime, Dr. William Petit, 54, was in the courtroom for the three-week trial, which included gruesome evidence and heartbreaking testimony. Hayes’ alleged accomplice, Joshua Komisarjevsky, will stand trial for murder next year.

Actor Charlie Sheen, 45, played the role of father of the bride when his daughter Cassandra Estevez, 25, married her childhood sweetheart, Casey Huffman, 27, Sept. 25 in Santa Barbara, Calif. Guests at the lavish affair included the Two and a Half Men star’s father, Martin Sheen, and Charlie’s brother Emilio Estevez. Wedding planner Jill La Fleur said that during the reception Sheen lovingly toasted his daughter and new son-in-law. “He told her how happy he was for her,” said La Fleur, “and then he teased the groom and made everyone laugh.” Cassandra’s mother is Paula Speert, who was Sheen’s girlfriend in high school.
