Four years after retiring from professional cycling, Lance Armstrong, 37, finished third in the 96th Tour de France, in Paris July 26. “I did everything I could,” said the seven-time Tour champion, 37, before the final stage. “For me, and even more for my kids, it’s probably a healthy thing for them to see [me lose]. [They thought] their dad never lost … so it’s good for them to see Dad get third and still be cool with that.”


Misdemeanor assault charges against Kiefer Sutherland, 42, were dropped on July 21, according to N.Y.C. officials. The 24 actor, who allegedly headbutted fashion designer Jack McCollough at a New York City party in May, is also off the hook with the L.A. City Attorney’s office, which investigated the actor for a possible probation violation. The actor is currently serving a five-year probation term following a DUI conviction in 2007.


The dance world lost a revolutionary choreographer with the passing of Merce Cunningham, 90, who died July 26 in New York City. A former soloist with Martha Graham’s dance company in the 1940s, Cunningham was best known for his impact on modern dance. In a statement released by the Cunningham Dance Foundation, which he founded in 1953, “Merce revolutionized the visual and performing arts—not for the sake of iconoclasm, but for the beauty and wonders that lay exploring new possibilities.” •Gidget (inset), 15, the cheeky Chihuahua from Taco Bell’s ad campaign, died from a stroke on July 21.


Just a day after former American Idol contestant Alexis Cohen was killed in an apparent hit-and-run accident July 25, police in Ocean County, N.J., arrested Daniel J. Bark, 23 (inset). According to prosecutors, Bark, who was found guilty of DUI in 2004, was fleeing the scene of another collision when he allegedly struck Cohen. He has been charged with aggravated manslaughter, death by vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident. Cohen, of Allentown, Pa., auditioned for seasons 7 and 8, gaining notoriety for her tirade against judge Simon Cowell.
