Wrong place, wrong time: The teenage daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore witnessed a drug bust in Maryland July 25. Rumer Willis, 18—in town to film the thriller From Within—was one of four people in an Aberdeen, Md., La Quinta Inn room when police were called to investigate noise complaints. After entering the room, cops arrested one man on suspicion of marijuana possession. Willis was not charged with any crime. Reps for her parents had no comment.
Albert Gore III, son of former vice president Al Gore, pleaded guilty to four drug-related charges July 30 in an Orange County (Calif.) courtroom. Gore, 24, will enter a drug rehab program for 90 days and will not serve prison time. “This is what anyone coming off the street would be eligible for,” said a spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney. (Cops busted Gore with 140 Vicodin pills, a small amount of marijuana and “dozens” of other prescription meds July 4.) A Gore family spokeswoman had no comment on the sentence…. David Hans Schmidt, 47, who allegedly attempted to extort more than $1 million from Tom Cruise (inset) since May, was arrested July 24. FBI officials say Schmidt threatened to sell more than 7,000 stolen photographs of Cruise and wife Katie Holmes‘s November wedding if the actor didn’t shell out for them. Schmidt, who was released after posting $100,000 bond, faces up to two years in prison.

After a long battle with leukemia, talk show pioneer Tom Snyder died July 29 at 71. Snyder, who hosted the Tomorrow show after Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show on NBC, died at home in San Francisco. An inspiration to David Letterman, who took over his time slot in 1982, Snyder was known for his offbeat interviews and ever-present halo of cigarette smoke. “Tom was the very thing that all broadcasters long to be—compelling,” Letterman told PEOPLE. “Whether he was interviewing politicians, authors, actors or musicians, Tom was always the real reason to watch.”
