Former U.S. senator (D-N.Y.) Alfonse D’Amato, 66, proposed to lawyer Katuria Smith during a surprise party for her 38th birthday on Dec. 13 in Island Park, N.Y. D’Amato has four grown children with his first wife, Penelope.


Country music star Kenny Rogers, 64, and his wife of five years, Wanda, 37, are expecting twins this summer. They will be the couple’s first children. Rogers has three children from previous marriages.


Chris Harrison, 32, the host of ABC’s The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, and his wife, Gwen, 31, welcomed their second child, daughter Taylor Marie, on Dec. 21 in Los Angeles. The Harrisons have a 2-year-old son, Joshua….

The West Wing’s Marlee Matlin and her husband, Los Angeles detective Kevin Grandalski, both 38, had their fourth child on Dec. 26 in L.A. Isabelle Jane joins big sister Sarah, 7, and brothers Brandon, 3, and Tyler, 1.


Albert A. Gore III, 21, the son of former Vice President Al Gore, was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession on Dec. 19 in Bethesda, Md., after police stopped the car Gore was driving because the headlights weren’t on. Gore was released pending trial. A rep for the family could not be reached for comment.


On Dec. 23 a Chesapeake, Va., jury sentenced Lee Boyd Malvo, 18, to life in prison without the possibility of parole for his part in the 2002 Washington, D.C.-area sniper attacks that left 10 people dead (PEOPLE, Nov. 11, 2002).


Actress Hope Lange, 70, who earned an Oscar nomination for 1957’s Peyton Place, died in Santa Monica on Dec. 26 of an infection due to intestinal inflammation. Lange appeared in dozens of films and later won two Emmys for her role as a widow living in a windmill inhabited by a ghost (Edward Mulhare) on TV’s The Ghost & Mrs. Muir (1968-70)….

British actor Alan Bates, 69, who first gained fame on the London stage before starring in a string of top 1960s movies including Zorba the Greek and The Fixer, died of cancer at a London hospital on Dec. 27. Bates won a Tony Award in 2002 for Broadway’s Fortune’s Fool….

Country singer Gary Stewart, 59, who had a No. 1 hit in 1975 with “She’s Actin’ Single (I’m Drinkin’ Doubles),” was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound on Dec. 16 at his Fort Pierce, Fla., home.
