Harvard paleontologist and popular science writer Stephen Jay Gould, 60, who rocked the science world with his revolutionary ideas about evolution, died of cancer at his New York City home on May 17.

Ursula Reichert-Habbishaw, 51, a Kassel, Germany, resident accused of stalking actor Richard Gere, 52, pleaded guilty to aggravated harassment on May 16 in Manhattan. Reichert-Habbishaw, who had allegedly called Gere more than 1,000 times in the past 14 months and had shown up at his New York City office, avoided jail time by agreeing to immediately return to Germany….

On May 15 in L.A., Sante Kimes, 67, and her son Kenneth, 27, pleaded not guilty to charges that they killed businessman David Kazdin, 63, in 1998 and stuffed his body in a trash bin. The con artists are already serving at least 120 years in New York for the 1998 murder of Manhattan socialite Irene Silverman, 82. They could both face the death penalty in California.


The earliest draft of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, thought to be written in 1818, was sold to an anonymous telephone bidder for a record-breaking $1.9 million on May 17 at Sotheby’s in London. The price of the handwritten composition was 10 times more than that of a Beethoven piano sonata sold a decade ago.


New Jersey judge Robert Baer, 46, sued The Sopranos creator David Chase, 56, for an undisclosed sum on May 15 in Newark, N.J., for allegedly stealing the idea for the HBO show. Baer, a former prosecutor familiar with the New Jersey Mafia, charged that in 1995 he pitched the Mob series to Chase, who promised him a cut of any future profits. He also claims he consulted with Chase many times and even has a draft of the first episode that he reviewed and corrected. Chase’s lawyer said, “We don’t comment on frivolous claims.”


On May 13 John Wayne Bobbitt, 35, notorious for having his penis cut off in 1993 by his then wife, Lorena, was charged with battery and domestic violence after he allegedly attacked Joanna Ferrell, 31, his wife of two months, at their Las Vegas home. Ferrell obtained a temporary restraining order against her husband. Bobbitt had been scheduled to square off against Joey Buttafuoco on Celebrity Boxing 2, but FOX replaced him with female professional wrestler Chyna.
