Best-selling British novelist Martin Amis, 48, author of London Fields, and American writer Isabel Fonseca, 36, married on June 29 in London. It was his second marriage and her first. The couple have an 18-month-old daughter, Fernanda.


Retired barber Robert George, 74, who demonstrated his eccentric zeal for Christmas by dressing as Santa all year, died on July 1 in Bur-bank, Calif., from complications of heart disease and diabetes. Starting in 1956 with President Eisenhower, George participated in official holiday ceremonies at the White House through six administrations, earning the St. Nick-name of the Nation’s Santa Claus. Though he was interred in a bright red, customtailored jacket-and-pants ensemble, it was not one of the 38 fur-trimmed Santa suits in his wardrobe….

Character actor Harold Herthum, 69, who played the cigarette-puffing doctor in Forrest Gump and added a dab of his Dixie drawl to three other films set in the South, died of a heart attack on the Fourth of July in Baton Rouge….

Virginia Guynes, the 54-year-old mother of Demi Moore, died from a cancerous brain tumor on July 2 at her home in Farming-ton, N.Mex., with the actress at her bedside. After a decade-long off-and-on estrangement (during which, in February 1993, Guynes posed for the hard-core nudie magazine High Society), mother and daughter reconciled earlier this year with the onset of Guynes’s illness….

Football quarterback and Hall of Famer Sid Luckman, whose pinpoint passes for the Chicago Bears led them to four NFL championships in the 1940s, died on July 5 in Aventura, Fla., of heart failure. He was 81.


Elizabeth Ann Oliver, 40, the woman who delivered her baby before a live audience via the Internet on June 16 but insisted she be identified only by her first name, surrendered to Orlando authorities on June 30 for passing rubber checks in 1989 and 1990. One of the cyber-viewers who checked out Oliver in labor included an Orange County, Fla., prosecutor who, until then, had labored in vain to find her.


Methodist minister-turned-TV’s Frugal Gourmet Jeff Smith, 59, reached an out-of-court settlement on July 3 in Tacoma, Wash., with the seven men who last year filed sexual abuse lawsuits against him and were scheduled to bring their case to court on July 6. The men alleged that when they were teenagers, Smith used alcohol, intimidation and physical force to obtain sex—an allegation Smith denied.


Armed burglars shot Wu-Tang Clan member ODB, whose legal name is Russell Jones, on June 30 in a Brooklyn apartment. The 29-year-old ODB (for OI’ Dirty Bastard), who crashed the stage at last February’s Grammy Awards to complain about his loss in the Best Rap album category, suffered superficial back and arm wounds in the ensuing scuffle but refused hospitalization. His assailants, who stole an indeterminate amount of jewelry, remain at large.
