Christy Henrich, 22, a champion gymnast who suffered from anorexia nervosa and bulimia, died of multiple organ system failure on July 26 in Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., near her hometown of Independence. The 4’10” athlete, who had a compulsive fear of being too heavy to compete, narrowly missed making the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team in 1988. At her death she weighed 60 lbs….
Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Kevin Carter, 33, died an apparent suicide July 27 in Johannesburg. Carter won this year’s Pulitzer for feature photography for his haunting photo of a starving Sudanese child stalked by a vulture.
Charlie’s Angel Kate Jackson, 45, is recovering at her Birmingham, Ala., home after heart surgery on July 25 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center. Jackson, a breast-cancer survivor who underwent a partial mastectomy in 1989, had suffered since birth from an atrial septal defect, a hole between the two chambers of the heart. The actress is expected to be fully recovered within a few weeks.
Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss, 28, and her father, Paul Fleiss, 60, a Los Angeles pediatrician, pleaded not guilty on Aug. 1 in L.A. to federal charges of conspiring to shelter hundreds of thousands of dollars she allegedly amassed as a madam. The 14-count indictment charges both Fleisses with conspiracy, tax fraud and money laundering. The younger Fleiss stands trial later this month on charges of pandering and cocaine possession….
On July 26, William Kennedy Smith, 33, settled a civil suit for an undisclosed amount with Henry Cochran, 27, a bouncer who had accused him of assault during a bar brawl on October 23 in Arlington, Va. Cochran claimed that Smith punched him in the face….
On July 13, onetime Fergie paramour John Bryan, 39, was ordered by the High Court in London to pay Jane and Rainer Luedecke, the Duchess of York’s sister and brother-in-law, $82,500 for breaching an arrangement with them to have Hello! magazine cover the couple’s January wedding in Australia. Bryan had negotiated that the bride, 36, and the groom, 34, would get $300,000 for a 21-page spread in the magazine; they only received $217,500. Bryan was ordered to pay the couple interest as well as cover their legal costs.
Screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, 49, and Naomi Baka, 35, an artist, married in Maui on July 30. The couple have a 4-month-old son, Joseph. Eszterhas, who wrote Sliver, became involved with Baka after her husband, Sliver producer Bill MacDonald, ran off with the film’s star, Sharon Stone. Eszterhas has two children with his first wife, Gerri.
Gary Oldman, 36, and Isabella Rossellini, 42, became engaged while filming Immortal Beloved, a story about Beethoven, in Prague. They now plan to marry in New York City in December. It will be his second marriage, her third. Rossellini has a daughter, Elettra, 11, with former husband, producer Jonathan Wiedemann.
Robert Kennedy Jr., 40, and his wife, Mary Richardson, 34, an architectural designer, welcomed their first child, a son, Conor (8 lbs. 10 ozs.), on July 24 in Westchester, N.Y. Kennedy, a professor of law at Pace University, has two children, Robert 3rd, 9, and Kathleen, 6, with his first wife, Emily Black.
