Louis Nizer, 92, one of the century’s leading celebrity lawyers and the author of 10 books, including his best-selling 1962 autobiography, My Life in Court, died of kidney failure Nov. 10 at a hospital in New York City. Nizer won a celebrated $3.5 million judgment in 1962 for onetime CBS Radio personality John Henry Faulk, who had been accused of being a communist. Nizer’s landmark victory helped end blacklisting in the entertainment industry….
Actor Tom Villard, 40, who starred in the 1980s NBC sitcom We Got It Made, died Nov. 14, of AIDS, in Los Angeles. Villard also appeared in 12 movies, including the 1986 Clint Eastwood drama Heartbreak Ridge.
As of Nov. 17, onetime Vietnam War protester Jerry Rubin, 56, was in critical condition at UCLA Medical Center after being hit by a car Nov. 14 while crossing a Los Angeles street in mid-block. Police say the driver of the car will not be charged. Rubin, one of the so-called Chicago Seven, tried for disrupting the 1968 Democratic Convention, is now an entrepreneur.
Syndicated newspaper columnist Dave Barry, 47, author of 13 humor books and the inspiration for the CBS sitcom Dave’s World, and his wife, Beth, 47, a contributing editor to the Miami Herald’s Sunday magazine, Tropic, revealed on Nov. 15 that they have been separated for three months. The couple, married since 1975, have a son, Robert, 10.
TV talk show host Ricki Lake, 26, her husband, Rob Sussman, 28, and 13 others were arrested Nov. 14 in New York City during a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals demonstration at the offices of fashion and fur designer Karl Lagerfeld, 56. The group, which police say caused about $3,500 in damage, was charged with burglary and criminal mischief.
American Jennifer Harbury, 43, who had been on a hunger strike in Guatemala City, demanding that the Guatemalan government release her missing husband, guerrilla commander Efrain “Everardo” Bamaca Velásquez, ended her 32-day strike Nov. 11. She will now seek criminal charges against eight army officers she claims committed crimes against Everardo, whom the government says committed suicide to avoid capture in March 1992. Harbury believes her husband is still alive because a guerrilla colleague of his claimed to have seen him in detention.
Princess Diana, 33, has taken on the post of patron of the British Red Cross’s fund-raising campaign next year, its 125th anniversary. It is her first major role since she withdrew from public life last December.
