Matthew B. Ridgway, 98, who from 1953 to 1955 was Army Chief of Staff under President Eisenhower, died July 26 of cardiac arrest at home in Fox Chapel, Pa. Ridgway succeeded Gen. Douglas MacArthur as commander of United Nations forces in the Far East during the Korean War. In World War II, he planned the U.S. Army’s first major airborne assault, the invasion of Sicily.

Actor Richard Moll, 50, who played big, bald Bull on Night Court, married sportswear designer Susan Brown, 31, on July 24 in Beverly Hills. Brown was escorted down the aisle by her stepfather, Milton Berle….

On July 23, outside Florence, actress Linda Purl, 37, who played Andy Griflilh’s daughter on Matlock, married husband Mo. 3, screenwriter Lucius Cary, 30, who carries the Scottish title Master of Falkland. Purl becomes the Honorable Mrs. Lucius Cary.

Ryan Calvin Ripken (around 9 lbs.) is one considerate baby. The second child of Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken Jr., 32, and his wife, Kelly, in her early 30s, managed to enter the world on July 26—a rare day off for the Orioles. Ripken, who by the lime of his son’s birthday had played in 1,834 consecutive games, is the only major leaguer with a chance to overtake Lou Gehrig’s all-time record of 2,130 consecutive games….

Who knew? Since New Year’s Eve 1989, actress Annabella Sciorra (Jungle Fever), 26, has been married to actor Joe Petruzzi, 33. As little noted as her wedding was the couple’s separation last October. On July 20, Petruzzi, who played Carlo Ricci in The Mambo Kings, filed for divorce in Los Angeles. He also asked for custody of a Suzuki 550 motorcycle and one of four bank accounts.
