Art-house movie favorite Satyajit Ray, 70, the first Indian film director to gain an international reputation, died in Calcutta of a heart ailment on April 23. Ray, who in March from his hospital bed accepted an honorary Academy Award for lifetime achievement, directed more than 30 films, including The World of Apu and Distant Thunder. Born in Calcutta, he worked as an art director in advertising before selling all his possessions, including his wife’s jewels, to finance his first film, Pather Panchali (1955). The movie won more than 16 awards and today appears on many critics’ lists of all-time greats….

Dancer and writer Jack Dunphy, 77, lover and companion of author Truman Capote for 35 years, died of cancer on April 26 in Manhattan. Capote, who died in 1984, left the bulk of his $600,000 estate to Dunphy. In 1987, Dunphy published Dear Genius, a memoir of his life with Capote. “Truman and I were never together-together people as most couples are. Such proximity would have killed us,” he wrote.
TV talk show host Geraldo Rivera, 48, and fourth wife C.C. Dyer, 35, a TV producer, are expecting their first child in October. Rivera has a son, Gabriel, 12, from an earlier marriage.
