On the Record: Kellie Pickler

First concert? I didn’t grow up being able to go to concerts. I didn’t have the money. My friend won two tickets off a radio station to a Kenny Chesney concert when I was 17 or 18. I don’t know how he does it, but he can connect with 50,000 people. He leaves every ounce of himself onstage.

Favorite song to dance to? I loved being a part of Dancing with the Stars [which she won in May], but we didn’t pick our songs. I’m not familiar with a lot of pop stuff, so I didn’t know most of the songs. My partner Derek [Hough] picked a song for our freestyle dance called “Beneath Your Beautiful” by Labrinth and Emeli Sandé. I loved it after I heard it.

Most recent album purchase? Ashley Monroe’s Like a Rose. She’s one of my favorite girls in the world. She was one of the first people I met when I moved to Nashville after American Idol, and we were label mates. We joke that she’s my sister from another mister. She has one of the most true country voices you’ll ever hear. She’s a modern-day Dolly.

Down-in-the-dumps song? When I’m having my own pity party, it’s Lee Ann Womack. She has a song called “Have You Seen That Girl.” I’ve sat on my bus, drunk a bottle of wine, cried and felt sorry for myself to that song I don’t know how many times.

Favorite workout music? I’m an outdoor person and I love hiking in the woods, but I don’t listen to anything when I’m outside. I want to hear nature – I want to hear the creek water. I want to hear the birds. I want to hear the little animals and the leaves blowing. That’s my moment to get away and be with God.

Your desert island disc? Anything by Tammy Wynette. Or Dolly Parton. Or Loretta Lynn. Or Kitty Wells. Or Patsy Cline. Those are the women I could listen to on repeat every day.

Most romantic song? My husband, Kyle, wrote our wedding song “Say I Do,” and we made it a duet. He’s my favorite person to listen to sing. We have a piano in our bedroom, and he plays and sings to me all the time.

Song that’s stuck in your head? Miley Cyrus‘s “Wrecking Ball.” Kyle and I were on my bus the other night watching Saturday Night Live and she was on. I was blown away. I know she’s controversial, but that girl can sing.
