Natalie Portman: Actress

Posted on

Under the ever-changing headgear of Star Wars‘ Queen Amidala, Natalie Portman exudes an otherworldly loveliness. “She’s gorgeous,” says Matt Williams, who directed her as a pregnant teenager in 2000’s Where the Heart Is, “but people are also drawn to her for her intellect, substance and heart.” Displaying all three, the 5’3″ Jerusalem-born, Long Island-raised actress—the only child of a fertility specialist and an artist mom—restricts acting to her vacations from Harvard, where the 20-year-old psych major is registered under her zealously guarded real name (she borrowed Portman from her grandmother) and lives in an off-campus apartment. Timothy Hutton, her costar in 1996’s Beautiful Girls, gives Portman high marks for trying to lead a normal life. “She has no idea that jaws drop around her,” he says. Not surprisingly, Portman, who appears this month in Star Wars: Episode II—Attack of the Clones, the second of three prequels, doesn’t have much use for makeup. “I made one lipstick for her about three years ago, called Natalie,” says makeup artist Jeanine Lobell, founder of Stila cosmetics. “She’s still carrying the same tube!”
