“I was delighted to get this issue but disappointed Angelina didn’t make your 10 Best Dressed list”

Jesse L. Brooks via e-mail

In your Best & Worst Dressed issue, this year’s most interesting choice is Gwyneth Paltrow (“Better Than Ever”) dressed in Lanvin. One question: Where did she park her chariot? And the bestlooking photo in the entire magazine is of Tina Turner. On the beach in her oversize sweater, she exudes what the others try to achieve, proving once again that beauty is indeed from the inside out.

Thanks for featuring both Michelle Obama and Sarah Palin. I truly did not expect to see equal space given to each of them. But I wish you had taken it one step further and included Cindy McCain. Her trendy updos and her youthful ponytail-and-baseball-hat look would have been a perfect addition to this issue.

What do you have against Katherine Heigl? She’s nowhere to be found on your Best Dressed list. Katherine’s dress for the Oscars was red hot, and she always looks great. Please don’t forget her next time.

Ack! Dangerously High Heels should have been headlined Dangerously Hideous Heels!

Eva Longoria Parker gained 10 lbs., went from a size 00 to a size 0 and called herself fat. I can only imagine what she has done to the self-esteem of all the girls who look up to her and now think that because they are a size 0 that they are fat too. I wonder if Eva would call herself obese if she went up to a size 2?

Congratulations to newlyweds George Takei and Brad Altman. It’s a shame that anyone would criticize gay marriage. Is it wrong for two people to be happy? I think not.

Like Austin, my son Matthew (14 months) has hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). Matthew is such a blessing to our family that I can’t imagine not having him with us. I know there are parents who have been told their baby doesn’t have much hope for survival (this is what we were told). By reading Austin’s story those parents may find the hope they need. This journey hasn’t always been easy, but I’m sure Austin’s parents would agree, it’s been worth it.

I am so excited that Jennifer Hudson and David Otunga have gotten engaged. He picked a woman with some real class. I bet his mom is jumping up and down. I wish the happy couple the best life has to offer.

Readers wrote more than 100 letters about Bill Smith’s crusade against the appalling conditions at Amish puppy mills in Pennsylvania. “Thank you for bringing this story to light,” writes Laurie Veley of Calgary, Alta. “If people stop buying puppies in pet stores, maybe we can end such cruelty and abuse.” Since our story ran, the Pennsylvania SPCA conducted the largest raid on a puppy mill in the state’s history. On Oct. 1 PSPCA officers descended on breeder Derbe Eckhart’s Almost Heaven Kennel in Emmaus, in Amish country, and found about 700 dogs living in cramped, fetid quarters. Eckhart was charged with two counts of animal cruelty. “It’s the happiest day of my life,” exclaimed Smith. Said a spokesman for Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell: “We are revoking the kennel owner’s license and are focused on [updating] Pennsylvania’s dog laws to make sure they get proper care.”
