There are readers who are smitten with Julia Roberts, and there are others—perhaps not as numerous—who can’t get enough of Kiefer Sutherland (PEOPLE, Feb. 25). In the eyes of several correspondents, though, these two are a twain that should never have met.

Enough already about Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland and all those other young Hollywood couples. We all know they’ve got a snowball’s chance of lasting out the year, never mind a lifetime. And am I the only person out there who thinks Julia can do a helluva lot better for herself than Kiefer?

In the immortal words of Mick Jagger, “I’ve tried, and I’ve tried, and I’ve tried, and I’ve tried,” but I simply cannot understand what beautiful Julia Roberts sees in Kiefer Sutherland. He has about as much sex appeal as Captain Kangaroo.

I am sick to death of reading about Julia Roberts this and Julia Roberts that. As far as I’m concerned, she doesn’t have any more talent (or looks) than the average girl next door. Her boyfriend, Kiefer Sutherland, is a different story. But let the guy finally start taking well-earned vacations of more than a week between films, and suddenly everyone’s writing him off as a has-been.

You state that “Hollywood’s young stars are bringing back old-fashioned love.” Then you say that Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland have been cohabiting since last spring. That’s “old-fashioned love”? Gimme a break!

It seems as if every time there’s a plane crash, the National Transportation Safety Board reports that many people died of smoke inhalation and burns, not impact. How many more people must die before the airlines use fire-and smoke-resistant materials?

Your article on Pentagon spokesperson Pete Williams was right on the mark. Perhaps this war will bring a benefit—role models like Williams and other war heroes whom kids can admire and emulate. Isn’t it refreshing to see an articulate, intelligent person on TV instead of someone like your typical rock star, who has serious trouble stringing three words together without a “like” or “you know” intermingled? I’d rather show kids “smart” than “rich.”

So how old is Susanna Hoffs? She’s 31 on the Picks & Pans page, but she gets younger—29—on the Chatter page. Oh, well, she looks great regardless.

Picks & Pans wins. Hoffs was 31 at the time of our issue. She has since turned 32.—ED.
