Madonna, famously, is nothing if not flexible. In the April issue of W magazine, she promotes her new album American Life by striking poses that draw on her Ashtanga yoga training. Still, “the pictures aren’t about yoga,” says Steven Klein, the photographer. “There are things in the images that revisit her past symbolically.” Such as a bed, a mask, a burning wedding dress. “Our premise,” he adds, “is that she was no longer into doing fashion-type pictures.” Madonna agrees. As she told W, “I’m just not that interested anymore in fashion per se. Now, actresses look like models and models become actresses. Yuck. It’s so boring.” Unlike the ever-shifting and amazingly limber Material Girl. “Madonna creates and destroys and re-creates,” says Klein. Yes, but does she ache?
