Her hair pulled back, her massive engagement ring flashing, Jennifer Aniston curls up on a sofa in a hotel near her Bel-Air home, peels a piece of string cheese and happily settles in for a round of girl talk. Relentless tabloid speculation aside, the star, 45, is happily juggling her career (Horrible Bosses 2 is out Nov. 26) with her love life; fiancé Justin Theroux, 42, is shooting his HBO series The Leftovers in New York City. Now narrating a digital short for Aveeno’s “The Beauty of Nature” series as the brand’s ambassador, Aniston dishes on everything from surviving long-distance romance to hoarding beauty products.
Summer is coming up – it was just the first day of spring …
That’s exciting. Nothing gets me more excited than the first day of spring.
How does your beauty routine change in the summer?
Summertime I wear the least amount, if any, makeup. I use a great moisturizer, Aveeno’s Positively Radiant with SPF 30. It’s amazing. And if anything, I put a little concealer here and there, a little rose on my cheeks, dust with bronzer. That’s summertime. And it’s good not to overmoisturize because it clogs your pores! More moisture in the winter months, obviously. But here [in L.A.], it’s just like one big season.
Are you a beauty junkie?
No, I get yelled at. I’ve had makeup in my drawer for 10 years that I should probably finally get rid of. I just cleaned out my makeup drawer. I mean, I do get new mascaras and things like that. But I also have this weird thing [about saving]. Like even jeans from my 20s that I can’t get rid of. They’re high-waisted and short. I thought it was awesome. I still have red loafers from Friends! I can’t get rid of them. I have a nostalgia about them.
What about perfume?
I always use the same. I created my own based on all these different fragrances that I love, like candles and body oils and serums. That was really fun.
What’s your biggest indulgence?
Facials. I think it’s really important, and I think it’s good to exercise your skin as much as you can. Even if I don’t go in to my facial gal, I’ll do a Sunday night scrub, a good mask. I do my at-home facial!
What do you use? Are you concocting with at-home ingredients?
I haven’t gone that far, no! I use a dermaroller, that’s really good. I just learned about that a couple months ago from a facialist in New York. It allows the serums and whatever products you’re using to really soak in.
Do you change your workout routine when bikini season is approaching?
[I keep it up] all year. It’s not about bikini season. It’s about being healthy. Of course we want to have toned skin and legs and muscles and all that, but it really is just about feeling great.
What’s your routine?
I mix it up. I’ll spin. If I have the luxury of time, 45 minutes of cardio mixed with 20 minutes of yoga or some sort of floor exercises with different pieces of equipment. I do a lot of core stuff, those rubber bands and the Bosu ball. It’s killer. There are so many things you can do on that little thing!
You made international news when you cut your hair! What was behind the new look?
It was a fresh start and wanting to try something new. And it’s fun to change up your hair every once in a while!
You don’t wear red lipstick a lot.
I’ve never been able to do red lip. I don’t like it. It’s too makeup-y. But I’ve been doing a little bit more of a smokier eye lately just for fun.
Can you do it yourself?
Yes. I’m a closet makeup artist. I’m a closet hairdresser, makeup artist and aesthetician.
You’re the best person to be friends with.
I know, I’m like a baboon. I will literally sit there and pick.
What’s the No. 1 thing that’s gotten you to look so amazing at this stage?
Oh my gosh. I’d say a little over a year ago, I started doing TM [transcendental meditation], and that’s really changed everything. Starting your day off with that and ending with that is pretty powerful. Twenty minutes. You just notice the difference. When I get lazy and don’t get it in, I can feel a difference. I do it first thing when I wake up.
Do you stick to your beauty routine no matter what?
Oh yeah. I bring everything [on vacation]. The best I can do of course. You have to. Especially with traveling, you have to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized. The regime is pretty simple too. You can’t overcomplicate it. It makes it much easier. I use Aveeno face wash, and I moisturize.
Last year you told us 2013 was about nesting. What’s the goal for 2014?
Well I’ve got Horrible Bosses 2. There is a lot of working that is happening this year. I’m working and finishing tweaking little bits and pieces of my house. So that’s fun. I always love a little construction. I really do. It’s exciting. But then it’s going to stop, and we’re just going to live there! 2015 will be nesting, 100%! I’ve got to take a break.
