To Americans who follow the fortunes of the Republican party, an elephant treading water is not news. But this pachyderm is in Canada, bathing beside the retired destroyer Haida in the 48° waters of Lake Ontario. Named Del-Rita, she’s the seven-foot, one-ton star of Puck’s Canadian Traveling Circus, a tiny show now playing at a Toronto shorefront park. Del-Rita acquired her taste for water while moving teak logs in India and has to be coaxed out with apples. If she didn’t swim so early in the morning, she might be as big a tourist draw as the Haida itself. After all, an elephant in the harbor beats a unicorn in the garden.
