Each year Washington’s Gridiron Club, a group of 50 male newsmen, holds a formal dinner where they lampoon political superstars. This year the laugh was on the club. Having refused membership to women, the men came under attack from female colleagues who staged their own “Counter-Gridiron.” While a few traditionalist fuddies attended the real thing, many of the people in town worth seeing went to the women’s bash, where they played such games as “Pin the Tail on the Male Chauvinist Pig.” Martha Mitchell, appropriately, ran a telephone booth. Kisses were sold, real and candy. Sweetest of all was the news from across town—the men’s Gridiron was a white-tie bore. Reported one spy: “Everyone smelled of camphor.”
