How to celebrate a Grammy win? “By drinking apple juice and hanging out with our mothers,” joked Adam Levine, frontman of best new artist winner Maroon 5. In fact, Grammy goers rocked out at afterparties all over L.A. Feb. 13: At Usher’s bash at Geisha House, new couple Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi hit the dance floor to Madonna‘s “Holiday,” while the host himself stood and boogied in his booth along with Nelly…. Love was in the air at the EMI party at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Newly engaged Nicole Richie gushed over her fiancé, DJ AM—”He’s the best deejay in the world!”—as he spun classic soul, while Janet Jackson and beau Jermaine Dupri and Lisa Marie Presley and guitarist boyfriend Michael Lockwood huddled in private cabanas And why in the world was former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno chatting up Usher at Sony BMG Music Entertainment’s fete? She’s spreading the word about a new project, an album that will tell the history of America in song. Alas, Reno did not revive her famous Saturday Night Live cameo and cut a rug. “You don’t want to see me dance,” she says The Kanye West/Boost Mobile party in the Miracle Mile district was so packed that the fire marshall closed the guest list at 1 a.m. So when Lil Jon arrived late—with 15 people—and couldn’t get in, he offered to pay “whatever it takes to keep this party open.” Unfortunately for Lil Jon, the fire marshal couldn’t be swayed…. Stevie Wonder wowed the crowd at the Ray Charles tribute party at Spago with an impromptu set that included Charles’s “Hallelujah, I Love Her So” before he and Alicia Keys headed to the night’s hottest after-afterparty, at Prince’s pad in the Hollywood Hills. There, they jammed with the host until the wee hours as guests including Elijah Wood and Penélope Cruz watched. Joining in on bongos was—who else?—Cruz’s beau Matthew McConaughey.

White Night

The well-suited shared a winning look

Who’s That Girl?

The tall drink of Her on Usher’s arm all night? Model Eishia Brightwell, 27. The Armani-sporting singer met his 6’1″ Gucci-clad date at a Prince concert last summer.

Pharrell Williams (left) and Chad Hugo of the Neptunes gravitated toward designs by Christian Dior and Dolce & Gabbana.

Triple winner Kanye West sported an Yves Saint Laurent suit and an a-maze-ing do.

Penélope Cruz (in Chloe) came with brother Eduardo, 19, a singer-songwriter just signed by Warner Music.

Gretchen Wilson’s tee honored a country legend: Merle Kilgore, who cowrote “Ring of Fire” and managed Hank Williams Jr. (Williams appeared in Wilson’s “Redneck Woman” video). Kilgore died on Feb. 6 at age 70.

Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler brought daughter Chelsea, 16, and son Taj Monroe, 13, his two children with wife Teresa Barrick.

For her part, Crow joked that her yellow Cavalli was just boyfriend Lance Armstrong’s old Tour de France jerseys.

Jamie Foxx’s date, actress Leila Arcieri, arrived in a Roberto Cavalli gown matching the one worn by Sheryl Crow.

Soul singer joss stone showed flower power in a Petro ZiIlia gown before belting out Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart” with a cancer-battling Melissa Etheridge (see story, page 78).

All About Clive

Fantasia, meet Santana: At his big Grammy bash, music man Clive Davis celebrated with a posse of protégés

“I’ve been around for years, but this night really feels like a milestone,” says impresario Davis, 72 (seated, at center, at his Feb. 12 party), whose upcoming projects include a debut album from actor Jamie Foxx. “Especially sitting in this room with these people, with all of this great talent. They make me feel proud, inspired and excited.” Among musicians he has nurtured (back row, from left to right): Maroon 5’s Mickey Madden, James Valentine and Ryan Dusik, Foxx, Mary J. Blige, Usher Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Chaka Khan, Velvet Revolver’s Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum and Dave Kushner; (front row) Maroon 5’s Jesse Carmichael and Adam Levine, Carlos Santana, American Idol‘s Fantasia Barrino, Davis, Alicia Keys and Velvet Revolver’s Slash and Scott Weiland. Davis “reaches across all different kinds of artists and he can see the ability in all of them,” says Usher. “That’s why he’s a giant.”
