When our troops come home, do they have a job, a house, the gratitude they deserve? This year we invited you, our readers, to make sure they do by joining our 2013 initiative, PEOPLEFirst: Help America’s Veterans.

What a difference you have made. Our story on Mark and Tori Baird’s HirePatriots.com resulted in hundreds of new job postings for vets. After reading about Heidi Janson’s Brides Across America, readers donated thousands of dollars and 700 gowns for military brides. Partnering with Welcome Back Veterans, sponsored by Major League Baseball and the McCormick Foundation, PEOPLE honored 30 veterans at the MLB All-Star Game, viewed by 11 million people. This week, we introduce Operation Finally Home, which gives customized houses to vets, like Andrew Litz, who are struggling to rebuild their lives while dealing with the wounds of war. You can help by going to operation finallyhome.org and following the PEOPLEFirst buttons. And watch this space for an announcement about our inspiring PEOPLEFirst 2014 initiative.
