A Tale of Two Pregnancies: Kate Vs. Kim

Posted on

“It is not easy” to look chic while pregnant, says Max Mara designer Laura Lusuardi of Kate (on Feb. 19). “But she pulls it off.”

Suede pumps by Episode are classic Kate. But “we may see less of her heels soon!” says a friend, fashion expert Nikki Pennie.

Kim recently tried trading in her Louboutins for sneakers but “I didn’t feel it … I can’t.”

Says Kim (in a Tom Ford pencil skirt March 12) of dressing her new curves: “It’s definitely fun! I’m enjoying figuring it out.”

Glam Night Out!

Kate honored athletes in minimal makeup and Alexander McQueen. Donna Karan-clad Kim sported an “extra-glam vampy lip” on Oscar night.

Workout Wear!

Kate, who reportedly picked up yoga leggings at London shop Sweaty Betty, strolls gently in the Swiss Alps. Kim, who’s been “wearing Alaï a leggings nonstop,” was working out twice a day until recently.

Running Around Town!

Kate hit the shops in a curve-concealing Zara cape. Kim headed to a family lunch in a body-hugging Kardashian Kollection mini.

Official Duty!

For Kate (at a military ceremony), formality rules. Kim went “more casual” in leather and lace for a premiere.

Battle of the Baby Bumps

Come July, both Kate Middleton, 31, and Kim Kardashian, 32, will welcome a little prince or princess. (Keeping the world guessing, on March 17, Kate told an Irish Guardsman, “I’d like to have a boy, and William would like a girl.”) Either way, both babies will be born into fame and luxury, and to moms who recently cut face-framing fringe. But for the mother of the future heir to the British throne and the girlfriend of the rapper behind Watch the Throne, the similarities end there. Middleton’s pregnancy has been a study in royal restraint, everywoman carb cravings and affordable fashion: Recent purchases include a $56 elastic-waist dress from Topshop. “Kate really makes an effort to be down-to-earth in her style choices,” says Max Mara Creative Director Laura Lusuardi, whose wrap dress she wore Feb. 19. Kardashian, for whom “comfy” means leather leggings, believes “fashion has to be fun!” and is “all about showing off my bump.” In January she flashed an armful of new Cartier bracelets, courtesy of boyfriend Kanye West, at her 17.5 million twitter followers. As the two race toward their due dates, how else do these expectant style icons stack up?
