Her gorgeous skin, flowing locks and killer body are all enviable — Matthew McConaughey is one lucky guy! — but Camila Alves admits she breaks some beauty rules. “I do one thing that everybody says not to do, but I do it because it works for me,” she told PEOPLE Tuesday at
‘s 2011 MVP Beauty Awards in N.Y.C. “It’s to wash your hair in the night, before you go to bed. People say it’s not good, but it works for me because I have curly hair. I can sleep with my hair up and then it dries, so when I wake up it’s kind of got that nice wave and it’s not too frizzy.” Growing up in Brazil, Alves and her mother used to treat their tresses with avocado hair masks every two weeks. But she has one hair memory that’s not quite so positive. “When I got pregnant with my first child, I thought, ‘I need a change,'” she recalled. She showed her stylist photos of Rihanna and Sophia Loren, and ended up with a short, slightly unflattering cut. “I walked out of there looking like Katie Holmes,” she said. “I like Katie Holmes! But I have dark skin, dark eyes, big lips. I’m growing it out long. If my hair doesn’t look good, I don’t feel good.” Now, Alves feels good almost every day, thanks to a renewed sense of self that came with motherhood. “I wasn’t a big beauty person until I became a mom,” she revealed. “As a model, other people were always putting [makeup] on me. But as a mom, I realized I want to look good every day — and what I have to do with it.” —Reporting by Asher Fogle
