In addition to being one of Hollywood’s fastest rising stars, Zoe Saldana is quickly becoming one of fashion’s It-girls. At a launch party for, an online fashion industry database founded by Saldana and her real-life beau, Keith Britton, the 31-year-old chatted with PEOPLE about her own style evolution.“[In high school] I was a little bit of everything,” she says. “Sometimes I would want to dress like a cheerleader or like a mean girl or the Sci-Fi geek that I usually was. It all depended on my mood, but I always knew that I loved fashion.” But no matter what she decided to wear, she always tried to take her own fashion-forward mother’s suggestions, she tells PEOPLE. “My mom is from the Caribbean so her advice has always been incorporate color in your wardrobe,” she says. “I always end up dressing in black and white–the New York state of mind. But I really do try to listen to my mom’s advice.” And other than her mother, who else inspires her style? “I just went to the Prabal Gurung show and I was absolutely smitten by all their clothes,” she says of the rising designer. “I was absolutely thrown back by his beautiful collection. There was definitely this black dress that he had with a leather belt and I went crazy for it. I was like, ‘I must have that!’” To check out Saldana’s new website, go to–David Yi, with reporting by Paul Chi
